IBUKA USA Partners with OHGMEC to Bring Genocide Education to Classrooms Across Ohio

February 14, 2025 – Columbus, OH

We are proud to announce a new and meaningful partnership between IBUKA USA and the Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Education Commission (OHGMEC) ,  a collaboration rooted in truth, education, and remembrance.

Together, we are launching a shared effort to ensure that the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda is not only remembered, but taught with accuracy, compassion, and purpose in schools across Ohio.

A powerful step toward education and awareness

IBUKA USA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the memory of the genocide and supporting survivors living in the United States. OHGMEC, established by Ohio law in 2020, is committed to promoting Holocaust and genocide education statewide. This partnership brings together our shared mission to elevate survivor voices, honor victims, and prevent future atrocities through education.

We believe that genocide education must go beyond dates and statistics,  it must tell the human story. By working together, we’re helping students, educators, and communities connect more deeply to the lived experiences of survivors and the lessons we must carry forward.

Our goals through this partnership

Here’s what this partnership sets out to do:

  • Develop meaningful educational materials that include personal testimonies from survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
  • Support Ohio teachers with training, resources, and ongoing professional development to confidently and respectfully teach about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
  • Work with colleges and universities across Ohio to build the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi education into teacher preparation programs.
  • Plan impactful Kwibuka (Remembrance) events across the state to commemorate victims and promote reflection, healing, and understanding.
  • Facilitate exchange opportunities for educators from Ohio and Rwanda to share best practices and deepen their understanding of genocide education.

We invite academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, educators, and allies across the United States to join us in this work. Whether through collaboration, resource-sharing, or co-hosting events, there is room at the table for all who believe in the power of education to change hearts and prevent future atrocities.

Now more than ever, we must come together to stand against hatred, denial, and indifference, and ensure that history is remembered, honored, and learned from.
